7:45 PM C. Glebe Road Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project: An Update. Presenter: Tom Hutchings, Capital Projects Manager, Division of Transportation, Arlington County. Arlington County Department of Environmental Services and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have been working on plans for pedestrian safety improvements for North Glebe Road from Carlin Springs Road to Fairfax Drive. The Project includes the intersections of North Glebe at Carlin Springs Road, Wilson Boulevard and Fairfax Drive and the intersection of North Wakefield Street at Fairfax Drive.

The Project includes improvements to the existing sidewalks and pedestrian refuges, improved striping for crosswalks, upgrades to street lighting, pedestrian and traffic signals and signage. The planned upgrades will improve pedestrian, bicyclist and vehicular safety and install handicap ramps designed to the most current standards.

The project work focuses on the corners of intersections where new private development has not occurred. New development that has been built within the project area has been coordinated with the proposed improvements. Examples of completed corners by private development include the NE corner of Glebe and Wilson Blvd (near the Vapiano Restaurant) and the SW corner of Glebe and Fairfax (950 Glebe Building).

Arlington County would like to finalize the plans and enter the Construction Bid phase by December 2009, then award the project by June 2009. We hope to start construction by September, 2009 or sooner.
