Nominating Committee Report & Elections for Membership Year 2007-2008

This letter announces our need for nominations of candidates for offices in the BVSCA. Election of officers is rescheduled for the meeting on Wednesday, August 8, 2007.

We want to address citizens in the apartment and condominium complexes as well as the single family homes in our area, encouraging membership and active participation in our civic association. The historical record shows that large gains have been made in Ballston-Virginia Square through the active involvement of residents. Each development and improvement has had a champion-a "block representative or captain", or one of our officers on the scene at meetings, on the street, or in the neighborhood collecting signatures, convening citizens, arranging meetings, etc. to ensure that the job goes through to completion. Here are some success stories of our organization occurring now or in the past years.

  1. Curb, gutter, sidewalk, and grass area for the east side of the 1200 block of N. Vernon St. planned for 2007. Initiated 2004, funded 2006, construction in 2008. Daniel Corts, block representative.
  2. Hayes Park, west of the Science School, 1400 N. Lincoln St., improved about 2005, new equipment and water fountain. Project overseen by Theresa Smith, project representative.
  3. Clarenford Station Park, N. Vermont St. and 13th St. N., completely developed and upgraded in 2006 with new equipment, curb, gutter, sidewalk, grass area. Denise Parks, project representative.
  4. Safe Route to School project on 13th St. N., curbs gutter, sidewalk, grass area, storm sewers, approximately three blocks. Though not an NCAC project, it has a BVSCA project representative DeAndra Beck. We have had major input to the planning for this work.

BVSCA has had representation at the Site Plan meetings held in advance of major construction within the Ballston-Virginia Square boundaries. Many of the street and building parking agreements and arrangements in our area have been made in conjunction with our civic association. Some large building construction has included space for use of community organizations with parking privileges.

BVSCA meets five or six times yearly in the commercial, green glass office building on N. Fairfax Dr. and N. Utah St. The west doorway opens to a public space for neighborhood meetings.

Our representative to the Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee (NCAC) meets in the Rural Electrification Association building on Wilson Blvd. across from the Ballston Common. It occasionally meets in private buildings in Clarendon when needed.

Many members of BVSCA attended meetings and provided community input in preparation for construction of the new portions of Washington-Lee High School, Washington Blvd. and N. Quincy St. This work is currently underway.

We participate in Arlington County programs such as Neighborhood Day and the Arlington County Fair held yearly in August. All civic associations furnish volunteers for these events. This summary is just a small sample of involvement where BVSCA is represented. Association officers and members can expand this list greatly. It should be of great interest to citizens inclined toward community involvement.

The Association's Nominating Committee has prepared a Worksheet to assist BVSCA members in submitting the names of their nominess for BVSCA officer positions for BVSCA Membership Year 2007-2008. BVSCA members can use the worksheet to submit your nominations to the Committee using e-mail, U.S/ Mail, or in person at the July 31st meeting. Please submit your nominations as early as possible so that we can produce an acceptable ballot.

The Association urges all members to attend the August 8th Membership Meetingand vote in the election of our officers and representatives for Membership Year 2007-2008.

Briefing on Re-development of the Metro Bus Garage Site

The Association has received information from the Ballston Partnership concerning the proposed re-development of the Metro Bus Garage Site. Highlights of the proposal will be discussed at the meeting.

Join BVSCA Today - Stronger Homeowner's Association Guarantees Better Neighborhood!

One BVSCA goal for this year is to increase membership and encourage BVSCA residents to participate in their Civic Association. This includes new members just learning about BVSCA and all previous members who have lost touch. There are several of you - you know who you are. BVSCA needs you. Your experience, knowledge and voice are invaluable to the Association.

The purpose of BVSCA is "to take action to protect and promote the welfare and livability of the Ballston-Virginia Square Civic Association's neighborhoods in particular, and in Arlington, in general" (By-laws of BVSCA). Only with a large, active and vocal membership can BVSCA be effective in its dealings with the County officials.

Residents can join by filling out the membership application and paying membership dues. You can do this either by 1) coming to a BVSCA meeting, or 2) by mail. The membership application is on BVSCA's web page and on the front of BVSCA newsletters.

Dues are $10 per person. Dues are payable when first joining and are renewable each year on or before the anniversary of that date. New members and members who have not paid their dues in the last three years must wait 30 days after paying their dues before receiving voting privileges. Dues are used to help fund the Association's activities and sponsored events. Join the BVSCA today!
